An Intro to Open Source for Newbies
Although not unheard of, it is somewhat rare to see explicitly technical related commentary on this site. Today is one of those special occasions. There are two similar points of interest in today's post:
1. Debian Linux is a real pain in the cloaca, at least in my experience this week trying to get it working. After hours and hours of stressful labor, I was able to get my sound and video drivers to work at the same time- only to have them BOTH 'loose' their driver modules magically when I started up my PC today! GAAA! Though I'm somewhat sad to say it, I recommend staying with Gentoo if you want to have a really customized Linux setup. Not only does it allow for more initial configuration, but it has MUCH better documentation, and a more stable system.
2. The title link for today's post is for all you new or potential Linux users. Covered are three areas: why or why not to choose open source software, some software title suggestions, and a clear, easy-to-understand explaination of what "Free Software" and "Open Source" really mean. Good luck and happy hacking!
